Solution to this one (per the accepted post below) is that for AWS EC2 all 3 of these need to have proper permissions (777 not ok for any of these). SSH tunneling allows to encapsulate the FTP control connection: ssh -L 2121:ftp.someplace. In these cases, when an SSH connection is possible, it can be useful to have some type of SSH proxy act as a gateway to the FTP server. This would obviously have to be updated in putty. Sometimes it's not possible to access FTP servers, or other times the FTP server can be located on a private network. Wrong IP: Restarting an AWS instance (or creating an image) is not guaranteed to keep the same IP address. However, the only thing I could think that would impact a previously working system is: ppk file: Unable to connect to amazon server using putty Wrong username: Disconnected : No supported authentication methods available (server sent :publickey). If you're setting up AWS SSH for the first time, these address the most common problems: Use this feature to connect to ftp server and upload or download. The error is familiar from when I set up the connection almost a year ago. The agent can then use the keys to log into other servers without having the user type in a password or passphrase again. One of TCP/IP protocol features is a possibility to tunnel one connection through another. Disconnected : No supported authentication methods available (server sent :publickey) Important: private key should NEVER be shared. I'm making some effort for this post to be a comprehensive troubleshooting list, so if you share links to other stack overflow pages, I'll edit them into the question. Create your SSH key on your laptop (here we show OpenSSH method): cd /.ssh ssh-keygen -t rsa -f filezilla (choose a desired name, usually a single word) The above command will generate two files filezilla (private key) and filezilla.pub (public key). SSH to my AWS server just broke for both Putty and Filezilla.
